Three autonomous communities, numerous towns, yet the same soul; from Laredo, in Cantabria, the place where he arrived and stepped ashore contrite and resigned —«Hail, O mother! Back to you I return, naked,» they say they heard him exclaim as he set foot on La Salvé Beach—, to the Monastery of Yuste, in northern Cáceres, where the clamour of bells accompanied his arrival at dusk on February 3, 1557.

RAMALES DE LA VICTORIA

The route of Emperor Charles V from Laredo to Yuste holds stories, anecdotes, places, and events worth remembering: from the wealthy merchant and banker named Rodrigo de Dueñas, who so desired to please the emperor with his economic might that the emperor did not consent to be his guest and paid him for his hospitality, to the decision to cross the Tormantos mountain range, full of ropes and abysses at the foot of gorges that roared like the fiercest army, instead of taking the four-day walk separating Tornavacas from Plasencia, all in order to reach the Monastery of Yuste as soon as possible.

Places, landscapes, moments to be lived and remembered, settings for encounters and misunderstandings, the route is marked and imbued with the memories of who was once the most powerful emperor in Christendom. These photos aim to be a sample of this route. A route to be enjoyed as many times as necessary. It deserves it.
