The Association Spanish Cultural Routes presented at FEATURE The Programme Cultural Route Experiences in Spain: Crossroads, an initiative that proposes a different way of travelling through the territory via history, culture and experiences, placing the Crossroads as the backbone of the offer.
The project stems from a shared vision of the routes that make up the Association: to promote quality, sustainable, and decentralised cultural tourism, able to highlight the material and intangible heritage of territories and offer travellers an experience linked to Spain's identity, memory, and historical narrative.
In this context, the Cultural Routes they are conceived as historical itineraries that have been travelled over time by different peoples and civilisations, and which today allow us to interpret the cultural, social and economic evolution of the territory. The Crossroads they emerge as those points where several routes converge and which, historically, have been spaces for meeting, exchange and decision-making. The project reclaims them as strategic locations from which to articulate unique tourist experiences connected to the local area.
During 2025, the Association's activity has focused on project development Touristic Configuration of the Crossroads Network of the Routes of Spain, approved in the second call for the programme Spanish Tourism Experiences and funded by Next Generation EU. The project had a budget of 200,000 euros and has reached a completion rate of 94 %, which has enabled the establishment of an initial network of eleven crossroads spread across various autonomous communities.
Among the main actions taken They highlight the definition of quality standards for experiences, the creation of a common narrative, the identification and cataloguing of resources, the training and awareness-raising of tourism stakeholders, the design and production of specific signage, as well as the creation of promotional and audiovisual materials. Added to this is the development of a new corporate website and a mobile application with geolocation, accessibility, and gamification functionalities, aimed at improving the visitor experience.
The presentation at FITUR has also served to advance the Planned work streams for 2026, which will focus on the progressive expansion of the network of cross-border destinations, the incorporation of new experiences, the transfer of the model to other territories, the reinforcement of digitalisation, and the international projection of the Spanish Cultural Routes brand. It will also be to celebrate the association's assembly, which took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, January 21st.
With this project, the Association is strengthening its bet on a tourism model that presents itself as an alternative to mass tourism and invites the traveler to discover the territory through calm, culture, and the possibility of choosing their own path.
