CROSSROADS: FROMIST

Frómista was a strategic enclave in the Middle Ages, a fundamental stop on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela and an important part of the expansion of the Burgundian order throughout the peninsula. Today Frómista offers a great opportunity to get to know this great order.

  • Church of St. Martin of ToursChurch founded in the 11th century by Doña Mayor de Castilla is a great example of some of the changes imposed by this order on the medieval religious sphere. Today it is one of the great national references of Romanesque architecture.
  • Vestigia Museum Legend of the WayThe audiovisual show is located in the church of Santa María del Castillo and tells the story of the history of Frómista and its relationship with the Cluniac monks, among others.

If there is one work that sums up 18th century enlightenment in Spain, it is the Canal de Castilla, which offers the high point of its more than 200 kilometres in Frómista.

  • Locks of the Canal de Castilla: Of the 49 locks along the entire length of the Canal de Castilla, 5 were built in Frómista, 4 of them consecutively. This is the steepest point on the entire Canal and the only one where we can see a quadruple jump.
  • A magical landscapeIn a Castile dominated by large fields of wheat and various cereals, the Canal de Castilla forms a green column that in Frómista is also crowned with reused buildings such as the Casa del Esclusero or the boat trips.
