CROSSROADS: BENASSAL

Benassal was a strategic enclave in the Maestrazgo region of Castellón during the Middle Ages, fortified in the 14th century by the Order of Montesa, the successor of the Temple in Valencia, which enriched the town with a large medieval heritage site. Today, you can visit the Middle Ages in:

  • The Castle of "la MolaBuilt between the 13th and 14th centuries, it was the residence of the Alagón family, the feudal lord's family, and later the meeting room of the town council.
  • The WallsWith defensive towers that protected the city, testimony to its warlike past, such as the Torre de la Cárcel, whose interior can be visited, and those of Garcés and Redonda.
  • The "Forn de Dalt".One of the few remaining medieval ovens in Valencia, it was for centuries the communal oven of Benassal, being active until 1970. It is currently a museum space dedicated to artisan bread.

But Benassal and Alto Maestrazgo is much more than medieval. This municipality forms part of the Valltorta-Gasulla Cultural Park and the Remigia CaveA few kilometres from the village, it hides a treasure of humanity: shelters with cave paintings from 7,000 years ago.
